Beech Class – Year 1 / 2

Welcome to Beech Class!

Welcome to Beech Class we can't wait to make memories with you and have a year full of fun and exciting learning.

Important Information

Maths in minutes-Monday-Thursday (handed in every Friday)
Spellings-Spelling tests will be every Tuesday.

Reading Books-Reading books are changed every Friday and children will take home a reading book they can read themselves and a 'share with me book' that can be read to them by an adult.

Summer Term

This term our vehicle text will 'Rapunzel', by Bethan Woollvin. We will be writing for a range of purposes, including writing letters, narratives, diary entries and creating poetry. We will be using a range of coordinating and subordinating conjunctions, learning how to use these correctly within our writing.

Phonics: Year 1 children will continue to practice for their Phonics Screen in the Summer term. We will focus on split digraphs and recognising them in words.
Spelling: Year two will have daily targeted spelling lessons. We will be focusing on spelling rules such as the /i:/ sound spelt -ey.The /b/ sound spelt a after w and qu.

In Maths, this half term we will focus on fractions. This unit builds on knowledge of equal parts, which they have come across in previous units about multiplication and division. This unit also exposes children to equal parts in a range of contexts, including shape, numbers, measurements and money.

In Science, we will be looking at plants. We will name the petals, stem, leaves and roots of a plant. Children will be planting, making careful observations of growing plants and discussing patterns of
change overtime. We will be recording observations of plants and labelling diagrams

In our History topic we will be learning about learning about significant historical events, people and places. We will be learning about the history and importance of Kings and Queens. Focusing on who our King is today. We will also celebrate and learn about the coronation and the history of the monarchy.

PE takes place each Monday and Thursday and swimming will continue every Tuesday.

Year 2 SATs
Year 2 pupils will sit the end of Key Stage 1 assessments in May. These will take place the week beginning the 15th May. Please continue to support your children by reading regularly at home and asking comprehension questions about the text.
